Greetings from Oulu, Finland. The people here have very nice and helpful to us, especially with moving into our apartment and getting enrolled at the university. We can take buses to the downtown area (which is right by the water, as is the whole city) and to campus and back. The people here are all complaining that it has been the most mild winter in about 7 years. There's hardly any snow on th ground now, but there is lots in this week's forcast, so maybe then they will stop complaining. But I can understand, they live to go skiing, sledding, ice skating (which is possible) and such. If you look on weather.com and type in Oulu Finland, you can see that we have daylight (this is January) from about 10:00am-3:00pm. More people seem to be out and about at those times I've noticed. Otherwise it's very dark right now. There is a discount-type store with a grocery store in there too right around the corner from us. Boy, they really are lacking in the fresh fruits and vegis though, although there are some better groceries for that downtown perhaps. When we aren't walking around Oulu, our entertainment is we download TV shows or listen to music using iTunes. Thank goodness for laptops.
I wonder how Finns keep from getting all depressed in the long long winters? I mean I saw the sun last week and it was like a miracle, but it'll be cloudy and snowy for a good long time now. I think they must count on the snow for some fun, so far it's mostly been icy and treacherous for walking around!

Hi Joia, I am very happy to see your words on the internet. I've never "blogged" (right term?) before. It seems like an excellent way to talk to someone so very far away. I am not happy to see that Finland is also having such a warm winter. Somewhere, someone must be enjoying a cold, snowy winter; not here in upstate NY nor in Finland. Keep smiling, Auntie Connie
Hi JoJo -
So, you know who's talking - does anyone else call you that? The photos are charming. I am excited for both of you. Can you speak Finnish well enough to talk with folks? Do they speak English? After just returning from another visit to Germany with limited ability to speak the language, I am recommitting to language studies!! Keep us posted on the efffects of the short days with little sunshine. Keep listening to music and searching for fresh fruit and veggies. Love you,
Barbara
